Forging an Identity: An Insider-outsider Study of Processes Involved in the F…
Gioia, Dennis A.Price, KristinHamilton, Aimee L.

We investigated the processes involved in forming an organizational identity, which we studied during the founding of a distinctive new college by using an interpretive, insider-outsider research approach. The emergent grounded theory model suggests that organizational identity formed via the interplay of eight notable processes, four of which occurred in more-or-less sequential, stage-like fas…

Nexus Work: Brokerage on Creative Projects
Lingo, Elizabeth LongO'Mahony, Siobhán

This study examined how brokers on creative projects integrate the ideas of others. We use the term "nexus work" to refer to brokerage requiring synthesis or integration, rather than just communication or transference of ideas. With an ethnographic investigation of 23 independent music producers in the Nashville country music industry, we examined how producers in the brokerage role fostered th…

Berrone,PascualGomez-Mejia, Luis R.Cruz, Cristina

This paper compares the environmental performance of family and nonfamily public corporations between 1998 and 2002, using a sample of 194 U.S. firms required to report their emissions. We found that family-controlled public firms protect their socioemotional wealth by having a better environmental performance than their nonfamily counterparts, particularly at the local level, and that for the …

Institutional Logics and Institutional Pluralism: The Contestation of Care an…
Gioia, Dennis A.Price, KristinHamilton, Aimee L.

Although most studies underscore institutional change as replacement of one dominant logic for another and assume that professions are guided by a single logic, professions that operate in multiple institutional spheres often have plural logics. We focus on medical education, the supplier of medical professionals, which resides at the interstices between academia and healthcare. Using archival …

Institutional Work in the Transformation of an Organizational Field: The Inte…
Zietsma, CharleneLawrence, Thomas B.

We draw on an in-depth longitudinal analysis of conflict over harvesting practices and decision authority in the British Columbia coastal forest industry to understand the role of institutional work in the transformation of organizational fields. We examine the work of actors to create, maintain, and disrupt the practices that are considered legitimate within a field (practice work) and the bou…

Engendering Change: Organizational Dynamics and Workplace Gender Desegregatio…
Huffman, Matt L.Cohen, Philip N.Pearlman, Jessica

We examine workplace-level sources of gender inequality to explore the link between organizational change and levels of workplace gender integration over time. To do so, we analyze the gender division of labor and key structural aspects of U.S. private sector work establishments, using longitudinal data from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 1975 to 2005. We find that women'…

Pursuit of Whose Happiness? Executive Leaders' Transformational Behaviors and…
Fu, Ping PingLiu, JunTsui, Anne S.

This paper theorizes and tests how chief executive officers' (CEOs') transformational leadership behaviors, which motivate followers to do more than expected and act for the good of the collective, influence followers' commitment. We theorize that CEOs' values may either enhance or attenuate the effect of transformational behaviors on followers, depending on followers' reactions to the congruen…

Stealthy Footsteps to the Boardroom: Executives' Backgrounds, Sophisticated I…
Westphal, James D.Stern, Ithai

Drawing from theory and research on interpersonal attraction, as well as interviews with 42 directors of large U.S. industrial and service firms, we identified a set of social influence tactics that are less likely to be interpreted by the influence target as manipulative or political in intent and are therefore more likely to engender social influence. We consider who among top managers and di…

Facilitating Knowledge Building in Teams: Can a New Team Training Strategy Help?
Salas, EduardoRentsch, Joan R.Delise, Lisa A.

Problem-solving teams composed of members possessing unique knowledge tend to be ineffective because of impediments that limit information sharing, including the sampling advantage of common information and differential schema structures among team members. Teams using a team training strategy aimed at ameliorating these impediments were expected to experience knowledge building and high perfor…

Goals, Strategies, and Group Performance: Some Limits of Goal Setting in Groups
Van Mierlo, HeleenKleingeld, Ad

Based on Mitchell and Silver’s (1990) tower-building paradigm, the authors performed two experiments on multilevel quantity goals, strategies, and performance in task-interdependent groups. The study compared four goal types: IG (individual goal), GG (group goal), IG + GG (individual + group goal), and NSG (nonspecific goal). IG yielded low cooperation and performance, whereas, unexpectedly, NS…

Effects of Intergroup Dialogue: Public School Teachers and Sexual Orientation…
Dessel, Adrienne B.

Prejudice and hate crimes against lesbians and gay men are prevalent throughout the United States. Prejudice in public school settings is particularly problematic for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) students and LGB parents. Efforts to reduce prejudice for LGB groups have met with limited success. Creating safer and more inclusive school environments is essential. An experimental mixed methods…

Kunze, FlorianBruch, Heike

This article addresses the role of age-based faultlines in relation to the perceived productive energy of work teams and transformational leadership as a potential moderator of this relationship. Based on social identity and social categorization theory, teams that have strong age-based faultlines— defined as age subgroup formation that is reinforced by internal alignment with other demographic…

Understanding the Motivational Contingencies of Team Leadership
DeRue, D. ScottBarnes, Christopher M.Morgeson, Frederick P.

Despite increased research on team leadership, little is known about the conditions under which coaching versus directive forms of team leadership are more effective, or the processes through which team leadership styles influence team outcomes. In the present study, the authors found that coaching leadership was more effective than directive leadership when the team leader was highly charismat…

District Magnitude, Social Diversity, and Indonesia's Parliamentary Party Sys…
Choi‌, Jungug

This study analyzes the party system in Indonesia's parliamentary elections since 1999. It argues that neither district magnitude nor social diversity accounts for the dramatically increased number of parties in votes at the district level over time; the increase may stem from the introduction of popular presidential elections and the rise of new issues.

A Deliberative Approach to the Tibet Autonomy Issue: Promoting Mutual Trust t…
He‌, Baogang

This paper reviews and compares three deliberative approaches to conflict, and applies the deliberative approach to the Tibet issue. It examines the case of a deliberative workshop, its achievements and limits. Deliberative dialogue appears to have improved knowledge and mutual understanding, enhanced mutual trust and deliberative capacities, and produced moderating effects.

A Tale of Two Afghanistans: Comparative Governance and Insurgency in the Nort…
Englehart‌, Neil A.

Afghanistan is often depicted as a failing state, but its failures display distinctive patterns over time and space. Regional variations in governance have been important in shaping the ways the Afghan state has failed and the consequences of these failures. This article argues that a history of better governance in the north facilitated the disarmament of militia warlords and comparative stabi…

Is Hong Kong Democratizing?
Boniface, Dexter S.Alon‌, Ilan

We argue that the transition to Chinese authority has not undermined democratic governance in Hong Kong and that voice and accountability have improved since the handover. We seek to explain this surprising result and conclude with a discussion of the implications of our findings for China, Taiwan, and cross-strait relations.

China's Roads to Influence
Holslag‌, Jonathan

This paper argues that although the People's Republic of China is promoting crossborder networks as a new regional common good, it is driven by both the fear of losing influence to other powers and the desire to create an open economic order in pursuit of Chinese interests. As in most forms of communication, it also appears in this case that the strongest player is best positioned to use these …
